The Retinue

Around the sarcophagus there were several human skeletons uncovered. Three young women were situated at the feet and head of the Lord of Sipan. Another two remains of males were found at his sides, a military chief, the standard bearer, a boy and a watchman that formed the honourable retinue.

All of them were sacrificed during the funeral ceremony accompanying their sovereign into the outer, spiritual world.
Underneath there were furthermore the remians of two sacrificed llamas and a watchdog. The recovered evidence shows a complex ritual. It is a product of an organised and advanced society that had reached a surprinsingly high level of technological development and had trade relations with far off regions in order to obtain exotic commodities like lapislazuli from Chile, spondylus shells from Ecuador and gold from the eastern mountain slopes.

The Old Lord of Sipan

On the same platform another tomb was discovered, much older and called the "Old Lord of Sipan"; obviously it was an ancestor of the previously excavated personage. This grave in spite of its smaller dimensions contained a skeleton and an impressive amount of ornaments and objects of status reflecting and equal high rank: the triple authority (military, religious, civil) of the Mochica Lords of the Lambayeque valley. The body itself was wrapped in cotton blankets and adorned with religious standards of gilded copper. Close to he body the scientists recovered 53 gold ornaments: necklaces, earrings, nose rings and others.

The most astonishing among them being a miniature representation of a Mochica warlord exquisitely elaborated in gold and silver.

A gold spider necklace and the image of a feline deity made in gilded copper and the "man-crab" or the breast shield, representing an octopus area deities of the Mochica religion and testimony of extraordinary artwork.

Esta ciudad es llamada también la Capital de la Amistad, Ciudad Heróica y Perla del Norte del Perú.

El turismo cultural y arqueologico se convertirá en los próximos años, en el principal ingreso de la región.
