In old times it was one of the most important sanctuaries of the Mochica culture which developed on the northern coast of Peru between the 1st and 7th century AD.

The monuments are situated near the village of the same name in the centre of Lambayeque Valley.

The Discovery

In July 1987 a team of invigorate Peruvian archaeologists led by Dr. Walter Alva presented to the world one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century, the tomb of a Mochica personage, the first intact grave of a ruling member of ancient Perú: the Lord of Sipan, dignatary and priest of the Lambayeque valley.

For the scientific world the find was comparable to he grave of the Maya prince Paycal and certainly of a smaller scale as the grave of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. It look a long time of research work to recover all pieces since it was the first intact grave to be scientifically recorded.

The Lord of Sipan ruled between the 2nd and 3rd century and represented the divine power on earth combining three authorities: the religious, the military and the civil one. He was buried in a wooden coffin, in contrast to the majority of the funerals of his time, who were buried in funeral sheets.

In his attire there were numerous and elaborated gold and silver pieces of unique artistic beauty, adorned with semiprecious stones like turquoise, lapislazuli, and spondylus shells from Ecuador, furthermore various pairs of ornaments, vestments and emblems which reflected the symbols of his power, rank and authority.
